The Fog (1980)
As the centennial of the small town of Antonio Bay,
California approaches, paranormal activity begins to occur at midnight. 100
years ago, the wealthy leper Blake bought the clipper ship Elizabeth Dane and
sailed with his people to form a leper colony. However, while sailing through a
thick fog, they were deliberately misguided by a campfire onshore, steering the
course of the ship toward the light and crashing it against the rocks. While
the town's residents prepare to celebrate, the victims of this heinous crime
that the town's founders committed rise from the sea to claim retribution.
Under cover of the ominous glowing fog, they carry out their vicious attacks,
searching for what is rightly theirs.

Review: This one still holds up (better
than the remake!). With little budget,
some clever low-budget tricks and many props from crew members and producers,
crew members dressing up as ghosts and some added shooting to liven up the
terror this is a great film. Atmospheric
with the fog effects and Dean Cundy lighting and a story by John Carpenter and
Debra Hill, acting by Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau, Janet Leigh, Hal
Holbrook, Tom Atkins, Charles Cyphers and music by John Carpenter = great film
Road Trip: If anyone wants to pay for
the trip to tour horror movie sites – I’m game! I’ve got plenty for the Bay
Area in CA and the Fog is one. Filmed at
Point Reyes lighthouse, Bodega Bay (which also was a location for The Birds),
Sierra Madre, Olema, Drake’s Beach, Inverness, and SoCal – Laurel Canyon, Van
Nuys and Raleigh Studios.
