Christine (1983)
In 1957, in Detroit, a red Plymouth Fury is built and is the
cause of two accidents, one of them fatal, still in the assembly line.
Twenty-one years later, the outcast and bullied nerd Arnold "Arnie"
Cunningham is getting a ride with his best and only friend Dennis Guilder and
he sees the wrecked car for sale in a garden. Arnie immediately falls in love
with the car. The car was given the name Christine by its first owner. He
brings the car to a repair shop of the despicable Will Darnell and works hard
to restore the classic car. While he works in the restoration, he changes his
personality to a cocky teenager and he dates the most beautiful girl in the
high-school, Leigh Cabot. Soon Arnie becomes selfish and jealous of the
supernatural Christine that kills everyone that is a threat to them.

Personal Review: “It’s
a haunted car….” John Carpenter. After
The Thing was hated by critics and not embraced by the public for the
depressing ending and violence, John was offered Christine and intentionally
pulled back from the violence in the book.
Some things were condensed down or left out, understandably so. Very, very few movies ever come close to
matching one of Stephen King’s books unless it was a mini-series because his
work is so indepth.
The film has flaws
but overall it’s a good film and you can’t beat real effects vs CGI in many
cases and it works in this one. The car
repairing itself is so great to watch. Roberts Blossoms, Robert Protsky and Christine Belford lend
their acting experience well to their characters and Harry Dean Stanton always
delivered. The young actors weren't the superstars of day and that was intentional
- the car and story were the stars. Keith Gordon, as Arnie, gets to go from
bullied nerd to confident young man to being totally insync with the car - in
other words, completely unhinged and obsessed. John Stockwell as Arnie's only
friend and Alexandra Paul as Arnie's girlfriend are solid and believable.
